part two of my "dating offensive 2005" involves waiting for the responses from the three people i contacted on nerve. i sent them messages last night - before midgnight, even! it's been almost twelve hours. i certainly expected to see some sort of "hey, thanks for writing" message by now. obviously, i'm compulsively checking the email account that's linked to nerve's online dating profiles. i won't be logging on to nerve during work; i just want to know there is a message waiting for me.

the thing that didn't occur to me until now is that i only sent out THREE messages. that's hardly anything worth describing as a "dating offensive." it's more like a friendly re-introduction to the online dating world. one that i meant to take much more seriously than i am. but right now i am dating gung-ho (or so i'm telling myself). you know how writers sometimes tell themselves they need to write at least two pages per day in order to finish their books? maybe i should convince myself to contact three potential mates per day. ahh, there's nothing quite as exciting as treating the quest for love like a job!

and, lets continue being honest, "dating offensive 2005" started unsuccessfully in march. i had one good weekend that looked promising. it turned into nothing, except for a phone call that i promptly blew off. "i wasn't ready!" i now exclaim to anyone who will listen. yet, i see this woman's email address written on a post-it note on my desk every morning when i grab my keys and wallet and head off to work. i should contact her. what's the time limit? is it okay that it's been over a month since we talked on the phone? she didn't seem too receptive on the phone, but maybe my charming email skills will work in my favor?

and that leads to why i really need to prepare myself for "dating offensive 2005." i need to go back to dating/wooing boot camp. is HITCH out on DVD yet? i can't write a good, flirty email to save my life anymore. it used to be a skill i thought i possessed. that was a lie. or, i have lost the skill.

this is a start. admitting everything. getting it out in the open.

now i just need to save this, return to it three hours from now and try to figure out how to make it funny instead of sad.

i just created a new nerve.com profile. and then sent out messages to people who have been on my hotlist for a day or three. now i know why i don't actively keep up with the internet dating - doing so is tough and take a lot of work.

i went to see the gates on wednesday. i really liked the whole experience. i spent about an hour in the park and didn't see as many gates as i'm sure a lot of people did. i took the southern route and decided to call it an afternoon. i left with a strong desire to have a backyard and to be able to put one of the gates in it.

i'm totally psyched for february. it means i get to follow the morning news' - TOURNAMENT OF BOOKS! how awesome is that? they've teamed up with powells.com to create a full set of brackets and books and head to head combat with book bloggers and other types discussing literary fiction. the official website is coming soon. i'm sure it'll be more fun than the oscars, but less fun than nickelodeon's kids choice awards.

it's been far too long since i've made any sort of post here. i've been busy non-blogging. basically, that means i've been hanging out with friends and occasionally thinking up a halloween costume (according to one friend, i created an image of kenny rogers after a liberal helping of just for men).

anyway, here's what some friends have been up to:

dan beats me to the tv talk punch with a discussion of the o.c. while it happens.

jamie gets all nerdy with a discussion about longbets (wagering your future).

mas reports from game four of the world series (all his photos from the playoffs are worth checking out, actually).

chris larry's mom examines the recent election, shares her frustrations and tries to stay positive.

and, catherine creates a new site - catherinespita.com - with a blog and a shop for her fashionable wares.

that's it for now. i'm trying to decide if i've got anything interesting to say about the now not-so-new fall television season.

to change things up a bit this week, i'll post a few links to words on the internet by people i don't know. the following blog entries are by people who have blogs that i read on a regular basis. my friends give me a hard time for never making comments or even reading comments. that's a habit i'm trying to change but i know it's going to take some time. while i work on that, please consider this a half-assed substitute.

SHE IS NOT A MACHINE - karri of "one fish up, one fish down" vows to write her new script in less than a week. (and she finishes it, too)

THE FAUX CORE ROMANCE NOVEL - sarah of "que sera sera" goes on about wilco (like everyone in new york this past week seemed to do...what is up with that? did the band suddenly get a billion times more popular? please, seriously, some explain this to me) but also talks about the new novel a co-worker of hers is reading.

PETABYTES OF MUSIC STORAGE - matt of "a whole lotta nothing" checks out laura holder's photographs of new yorkers listening to music via headphones and starts to wonder about the harddrive storage all the commuters in the city are using for their music. (by the way, i saw laura present her photos at the apple store a few weeks ago and her presentation was one of my favorites). i'm also fascinated by matt's inclusion of del.icio.us links on his weblog.

THERE IS NOTHING HERE ABOUT WAX BEANS, PART I - i don't even know where to start with this most recent blog entry from the person behind "a sorta kinda fairytale." as usual, i am blown away and mesmerized. following along with sentences such as

Is it normal to lie awake at night wishing I had a debilitating drug habit and that Phylicia Rashad had a debilitating drug habit because I think she'd make a great drug buddy and she wouldn't mind if I called her "Mrs. Cosby" or "Mom" or "Bitch, pass the crack pipe"?
